Firefighter Mental Health: When “I’m Fine” Stops Working
In the fire service, "I'm fine" is almost part of the job.
After a difficult call, a long shift, or a rough night, you reset and move on because that's what the job requires. Firefighters are trained to stay calm under pressure and keep going, even when things are hard.
But over time, that constant pressure can take a toll.
The effects aren't always obvious. It might look like feeling more irritable, having trouble sleeping, staying "on" even during your days off, feeling disconnected from family, or simply realizing you don't feel like yourself anymore.
Many firefighters assume it's just part of the job. While stress comes with the profession, living in a constant state of stress doesn't have to.
Therapy isn't about changing who you are or making you relive every difficult call. It's about giving you the tools to manage the cumulative stress of the job, strengthen your relationships, and protect your mental health so you can continue doing the work you love.
You don't have to wait until you're burned out or in crisis to ask for support. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
